Mission Plaza in San Francisco - 30 kW Solar PV & 2,800 Sq. Ft. Solar Thermal

mission plaza

Mission Plaza, located in San Francisco, California, is a federally subsidized low-income apartment building designed for seniors, families and people with disabilities. SEP was hired to manage the process of adding solar Photovoltaics (PV) and solar thermal to the building. SEP worked with the property management company, Urban Pacific Properties, to coordinate re-roofing and the installation of both the solar systems.

The project was awarded to a local installation company. A combination of PV and solar thermal was chosen to help offset the common area maintenance (CAM) costs associated with the elevators, hall lighting, exterior lighting and domestic hot water. The PV system offsets over $9,000 per year in avoided energy costs, which is approximately 40% of the buildings CAM electrical loads. The solar thermal provides over 75% of the domestic hot water needs for the entire building. The solar thermal is plumbed to the ground floor domestic hot water tank.
